Almost half of American adults have some form of periodontal disease. Surprisingly the majority of sufferers do not even realize they have it. Gingivitis is the most common type of gum disease. It causes irritation, redness and swelling of your gums. With regular cleanings, examinations every six months, daily brushing and flossing, gingivitis can generally take care of itself.
Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware you have it. If gingivitis is not treated it can advance to periodontitis. Periodontitis will cause your gums to pull away from your teeth. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed. The treatment of periodontal disease is not usually easy. Dr Heck recommends regular check-ups and daily flossing and brushing to help prevent periodontitis.
